"Eastern Wolfers Wildlife Management will no longer set Leg-hold traps inside developed subdivisions for Coyote and Fox Removal unless there is a den present. We have found that this creates more problems that it solves because while most homeowners will do what we ask them to do in walking their dogs on a leash, while the traps are out, some will not and allow their dogs to roam the neighborhood. A roaming dog will find the trap. And while none have been harmed by being caught, it disrupts the trapping cycle. If I have a domestic standing in one of my traps and the coyotes come by, they will kill it. We have other options we can use to remove the predators. All wild canines here in Georgia must be euthanized per State law. This is due to the fact that they are Vectors for many life threatening diseases that are communicable to Pets and Humans. We especially have an overpopulation of Coyotes in the state that we are trying to manage. Therefore, taking a problem animal from one location and releasing it in another does nothing to solve the problem. If you know of a trapper or organization that is doing this, please contact me at 404-583-2378 and I will notify the proper authorities. They are breaking state law and perpetuating a disease cycle that we are working to control. There are numerous reasons counties have ordinances against roaming dogs. Walton County Animal Control takes in over 100 dogs per month because irresponsible owners allow them to roam. Most are habitual offenders. Therefore, in the future, when we are called to trap coyotes and foxes out in this type of situation we will be looking to set the perimeter and travel ways coming into the neighborhood. We will require written permission from that landowner before we can set. This is not as big of an issue in partially developed subdivisions where the homes are near the front of the neighborhood since the coyotes would probably be living near the backside anyway. We do everything we can to notify the entire neighborhood that we will be setting traps. We usually give a weeks' notification before we come in to allow people to make arrangements concerning their pets. Unfortunately, since this has not been as successful as we need it to be, we have changed our setup model in an attempt to substantially reduce the disruptions and allow the trapping cycle to be more productive." Best Regards, Tim Ivey President-Eastern Wolfers Wildlife Management, LLC.
